Pair Victorian silver gilt Elizabethan pattern dessert serving spoons
8235
Excellent, virtually mint condition with no signs of wear to the gilding. The hall marks on the reverse of each bowl are good and clear. The makers mark is slightly malstruck on both spoons because of the curve of the bowls but is perfectly legible.
Highly decorative Victorian pair of Elizabethan pattern silver gilt dessert serving spoons. Made in London in 1874 by George W Adams. The long stems allow the Elizabethan pattern to be shown off to best effect and are complemented by the oval shell bowls. The cartouche on the reverse of each spoon is engraved with a contemporary crest.
Dessert cutlery was often of a different and more decorative pattern to the rest of the table ware and these very useful serving spoons would fit in well on any dining table. They are in such pristine condition that they would make an excellent gift. George Adams was a talented and prolific silversmith who often designed his own patterns for cutlery. He was married to Mary Chawner and was the last link in the long and famous dynasty of cutlery silversmiths which started in the late 18th century with George Smith and Smith and Fearn and which encompassed the Chawners.
