Impressive and elegant GEORGE III sterling silver bright cut shell bowled soup ladle.
Maker: John Shields. Dublin 1790.
The shell shaped bowl is joined to the stem by a lap join. The stem ends in a Celtic point and is engraved with wriggle-pattern bright cutting.
The end of the stem is engraved with a family crest surrounded by a bright cut oval and is possibly that of Myddleton of Offerton, Co. Durham. The only difference is that on the crest engraved on the spoon the tree is being carried on the left-hand shoulder and not on the right, also the crest on the spoon shows a Demi-savage man as opposed to a savage man as described in Burkes General Armory, page 720.
The full set of hallmarks are stamped on the reverse of the stem and are somewhat rubbed but totally legible and an additional makers mark has been very strongly stamped next to the original mark.
This is a beautiful spoon and could equally well be used for punch and other drinks as well as soup.
