Excellent, rare and very elegant George I sterling silver beer jug.
Maker: Samuel Margas in London 1715.
These jugs were very popular in the early 18th Century but not many of them have survived and very few in such good condition. Today, they make excellent receptacles for any type of beverage.
The spout and the handle have pleasing decorations which stand out against the plain bowl.
The owners contemporary initials I.S B are engraved on the handle.
A particular feature is the heart shaped entry from the jug to spout
The full set of hallmarks is clearly marked on the base of the bowl and also the scratch weight.
The contemporary coat of arms is engraved on the front of the bowl underneath the spout and are those of Trotman impaling Page for Sir Gregory Page, 1st Bt. and his wife Mary, daughter of Thomas Trotman who he married in 1690.
