Rare and early James I/Charles I Silver Bodkin.
Circa 1620.
The slit on the bodkin is decorated above and below with a Tudor Rose and the owners mark AR is engraved beneath the decoration.
Bodkins were used to thread bands of yarn/ribbon through all types of clothing including corsets, the yarn was threaded through the rectangular slit. They could also make holes in leather as well as being utilised as a needle. They were usually hung up on a belt using the small eye. The small hollow at the non-tapered end is believed to have been used to pick wax out of the ear, this was used for smoothing the thread for ease of use.
