Beautifully made GEORGE III small sterling silver swing-handled sweetmeat basket with marked handle.

This basket has a shaped rim edged with a band of reeding mirrored by a single band of attractive bright cut engraving. There is more bright cut engraving in three different designs at the top of the incline of the inside of the basket. A contemporary family crest is engraved on the inner base of a Stag Statant or Proper attired.
The basket stands on a plain collet foot decorated by the same reeding as the shaped rim. The handle echoes the shape of the baskets rim and which is also reeded.
The full set of hallmarks are clearly stamped on the inverse of the rim and the lion passant is stamped near the middle of the handle.
Henry Chawner was part of the Chawner family dynasty which dominated the production of flatware in the middle years of the 19th Century and were linked to Eley and Fearn who were also excellent and prolific flatware makers.
This a charming piece of silver with many uses.
