18th Century Latten Spoon with Cowrie Shell Bowl & Silver Handle

18th Century Latten Spoon with Cowrie Shell Bowl & Silver Handle

Sold

Very appealing 18th century Latten spoon with cowrie shell bowl and twisted spiral silver handle.

Made in the West Indies, circa 1765.

This type of spoon is typical of the West Indies. The silver is unmarked and is very firmly attached to the cowrie bowl by four metal rivets. The handle is elegantly twisted, ending in a sharp point. The bowl is slightly mis-shaped following the natural contours of the shell but there is no sign of any damage.

This spoon has many uses and would make a great conversation piece.
