Mortimer & Hunt Victorian Double Handled Sterling Silver Chased Mug. London 1843

Mortimer & Hunt Victorian Double Handled Sterling Silver Chased Mug. London 1843

£950

Versatile and unusual Victorian two-handled mug, the body chased with hop vine decoration on matted ground. The two handles are fashioned as vine branches and the inside and base of the mug are gilded. It is quite possible that the whole body of the mug and the handles were originally gilded but this has been professionally removed at some point during its life.
Makers: John Mortimer and John S Hunt. London 1843

The makers mark and the full set of hallmarks are clearly stamped just below the lip on the right hand side of the left handle. The base of the mug is stamped MORTIMER & HUNT. A number of these mugs were made and the figure 1301 on the base is indicative of this.

On the death of Paul Storr in 1838, his business (Storr & Mortimer) was continued by his nephew John Samuel Hunt under the name of Mortimer & Hunt. In 1843 the company became Hunt & Roskell until 1897.
Paul Storr entered into business with Rundell, Bridge & Rundell in 1807 who were the Royal Goldsmiths at the time. John Hunt followed in Storrs footsteps and the company Hunt & Roskell was listed in 1843 as Silversmith and Jewellers to Queen Victoria. Due to the Queens extended European family, they became the most important suppliers to the affluent society around the world.
