Delightful and very early GEORGE I silver baluster sugar nips.
Maker: John Gray. London circa 1720. Marked I.GRAY only.
The central part of the nips are decorated with two stylised acanthus leaves on either side. The pans at the end of the baluster arms are each engraved with the makers name I.GRAY.
These nips were not sent to Assay and do not have the official makers mark.
I Gray came to the end of his apprenticeship in 1715 and he became free on the 20th May 1715. His first mark was entered as small worker on 4th January 1716.
This would make a charming gift.
