This medal is probably the work of Thomas Pingo and was struck in England when Prince Charles had decided to try to recover the British throne. The medal was circulated freely in England and Scotland among his followers who had been informed of his plans. On the medal, Britannia represents the young Princes friends who were urged on by love and hope and who now awaited his arrival which he had led them to expect. In 1748 when negotiations were in progress for peace with England at Aix-la-Capelle, Prince Charles arranged for this medal to be distributed widely in France among the all the members of the upper classes. The French Ministry was keen for peace and looked upon this act as an insult. They complained to the French King who was unwilling to take any action. However the Prince de Conti said to Prince Charles that he was surprised at the content of the medal since the British navy was no very good friend to Charles. Charles replied that maybe but I am nevertheless a friend of the fleet against all its enemies. The glory of England I shall always regard as my own and her glory rest on her navy.
