Very attractive VICTORIAN sterling silver butter knife.
Maker: Francis Higgins. London 1855.
The border of the handle is looped into a knot on both sides of the knife where it joins the blade and this repeated at the top the finial. The handle is ribbed on both sides to simulate wickerwork. Each side has an oval cartouche which is engraved on the front side. However it has been rubbed and is now indistinguishable due to the fact that this is the exact position where the knife would be held.
The full set of hallmarks are clearly stamped on the back of the blade.
Francis Higgins was renowned for his original designs and this butter knife is no exception.
This item is of good weight and has many uses such as for soft cheese, pate etc.
