George III Onslow Pattern Pierced Straining Spoon by Thomas Chawner

Unusual and extremely elegant pierced George III Onslow pattern straining spoon. London , circa 1775 by Thomas Chawner.
The bowl is decoratively pierced and the Onslow finial on the stem is particularly fine. A family crest of a stags head is engraved on the reverse of the stem beneath the Onslow scroll.
The full set of hallmarks are stamped at the lower end of the stem. Although the makers mark Is clear and visible, the other marks have been pinched in manufacture and cannot be read clearly.
This spoon is a rarity and has been in the collection of a spoon collector for the past 16 years. Pierced Onslow straining spoons are not often found.
Thomas Chawner was apprenticed to Ebenezer Coker in 1754 and like his Master was an excellent silversmith.
