GEORGE III Set of 6 Silver Gilt Dessert Knives by William Abdy. Circa 1765
Handsome set of six GEORGE III silver gilt dessert knives.
Maker: William Abdy I. London circa 1765
The crest on one side of the handle shows the Royal crest, coronet and Garter motto as used by Ambassadors and Ministers as well as the Monarchy.
The crest on the other side of the handle is the crest of Wentworth (a griffin passant, wings elevated argent) below the coronet of a Marquess and within the collar of a Knight of the Garter (KG). This would indicate that these belonged to Charles, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (1730-1782) who was invested as a Knight of the Garter in 1760. He was Prime Minister from July 1765 - July 1766 and again from 27 March 1782 until his death from Influenza on 1st July 1782.
The lion passant is stamped on one side of the top of the handles where it joins the blade. The makers mark (WA) is stamped on the other side but is worn and unclear on some of the knives.
These are very decorative knives with hardly any wear to the silver gilt and would grace any table.
