Victorian silver gilt prize medal awarded to the Duke of Westminster
2923
Very attractive Victorian silver gilt prize medal awarded to the Duke of Westminster by the Royal Agricultural Society of England in 1897 at the Spring Show of Thoroughbred Stallions for Grey Leg. Obverse: In high relief, a stallion facing right in a field is greeting another horse (a mare?) over a fence. Beneath is stamped MAPPIN & WEBB. Reverse: Around the edge is stamped ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OF ENGLAND and in the centre SPRING SHOW/ of/ THOROUGHBRED/ STALLIONS/ awarded to/ (then, in blue enamel) THE DUKE OF WESTMINSTER. K.C./ FOR/ GREY LEG/ 1897.
Maker :- Mappin & Webb
This is a very attractive medal indeed. The stallion is beautifully portrayed and every detail of the grass in the field, the fence, bushes and the head and shoulders of the other horse are impeccably executed. Mappin and Webb were presumably the retailers and there is no indication on the medal as to who the artist was.
