Beautifully detailed and rare silver medal of Carlisle taken, the rebels repulsed. December 1745. Obverse: The Duke of Cumberland on horseback, sword in hand, with Carlisle in the background. Legend: GUL. AUG : DUX CUMBERLANDLAE. Exergue: NAT . 15 APR . 1721. A. KIRK . F. Reverse: The Duke as a Roman warrior presents an olive branch to Anglia, seated with her shield at her side and holding a spear surmounted by the cap of Liberty, the BIBLA SACRA on her seat. He is trampling on a fallen warrior whose shield bears the Papal tiara. A broken sword and yoke lie on the ground. Legend: SPEM REDUCIS MENTIBUS ANXIIS. (Hope of return to anxious minds.) After the capture of Carlisle, the Duke returned to London. He is represented as comforting Anglia who is surrounded by the emblems of Religion and Liberty with the hope of peace in consequence of the defeat of the rebels who in this medal are considered synonymous with oppression, tyranny and Popery. See Medallic Illustrations of the History of Great Britain and Ireland to the death of George II, vol. II, p. 606/264, which in 1885 rated this medal as Rare.
