Masonic EDWARDIAN sterling silver and enamel Preceptor's Star Badge.
Maker: Spencer & Co. Birmingham 1907. Richard Spencer. Masonic manufacturers, Great Queen St, London.
Obverse: IN.HOC.SIGNO.VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer).
Reverse: SPENCER LONDON. The hallmarks for Birmingham, lion passant, date mark and the maker's mark are all clearly stamped.
The preceptor is an elected position and is usually a Freemason who has spent several years as a director of ceremonies in his local lodge and is considered an expert in the ritual of the order. In English Freemasonry, the Preceptor of the lodge is usually appointed by the Master.
This is a fine example of a Preceptor's Star badge and has a very sturdy pin on the reverse.
