Rare and imposing Charles II late 17th CENTURY silver livery badge.
Unmarked. Circa 1680.
The badge is of oval form with a foliate border. The rim of the badge is punctured with holes so that it can be sewn to a garment. The centre is embossed with an armorial within a windows lozenge.

The Verney family are over 400 years old and their house in Middle Claydon still exist today but is now in the possession of the local authorities although the south wing is still occupied by the family. The most prominent member of the Verneys of that period was Sir Ralph Verney, 1st Baronet (1613-1696), politican. Entered the short parliament in 1640 sitting as Member of Parliament for Aylesbury and was re-elected for the Long Parliament in November 1640.
