1648/49 CHARLES I Very Rare Silver Gilt Memorial Death Medal.

Very rare silver gilt medal denoting the death of Charles I. This medal was beautifully cast and chased in 1649 by Thomas Rawlins, a pupil of Nicholas Briot and appointed Engraver to the Mint in 1643. According to Medallic Illustrations, he was highly loyal to the King during the Civil War and executed dies for local mints. At the Restoration Rawlins was reinstated at his place at the Mint in 1670.
See Medallic Illustration Vol I page 340/187. According to this publication the medal was produced upon the Kings death, 30 January 1648/9 to commemorate his fortitude. This is illustrated by the reverse which shows a hammer striking a diamond upon an anvil. With the legend around the rim: - INEXPVGNABILIS. 1648. (Unconquerable.) m. m. Cross.
