Elegant, substantial and highly decorative set of 6 William IV Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks.
Circa 1830. There is no makers mark but each candlestick has the number 13 engraved on the flange of the base.

These candlesticks are remarkable because they are not made in the traditional method used for Old Sheffield Plate and although they are 11.6 inches high, their circumference is more generous than is usual for their height, without any loss of elegance.
Each candlestick stands on a domed, part fluted circular weighted base with a beaded, spirally fluted stem. The waisted nozzle has a foliate drip-pan and beaded border.

Formerly the property of the Marquesses of Londonderry, it is quite likely that there were more than six candlesticks originally.

They have a very festive air. The beading on the candlesticks would ensure that as much light as possible would be bounced back into the room.

There has been some light restoration but the candlesticks are in very good condition and in keeping with their age.
