George III Pair of Sterling Silver Wine Coasters by Joseph William Story

£ 2,520

Reference
8547
Decorative pair of George III sterling silver wine coasters.
Maker: Joseph William Story. London 1808.

The gadrooning on the border is interspersed with shells, surrounded by acanthus leaves which give these wine coasters a very festive air.
The body of the coasters is plain gadrooned.
The wooden base has a central silver button engraved with the family crest of Heathcote. Stylistically, the engraving of the crest is probably between 1825 and 1840.
The full set of hallmarks is stamped on one side of each coaster near the base of the body and are very crisp. The makers mark is slightly rubbed on both coasters but is still totally legible.
Although the silver is in very good and sound condition, the base of one of the coasters outer wooden rim has chipped superficially at some time in the past and has since worn smooth again over the years. However, the wood is perfectly robust and will serve many future owners well. The wear is commensurate with age and use and this is a good and substanstial pair of wine coasters which have recently been re-felted.
