GEORGE I Caster by Thomas Bamford I. London 1723
Highly attractive George I octagonal shaped sterling silver caster made in London in 1723 by Thomas Bamford I.
The decoratively pierced pull-off top is partially hallmarked on the collar with the maker's mark and the lion passant. The full set of hallmarks is clearly stamped on the base of the caster showing the leopards head crowned, the lion passant, the date mark and the makers mark.
These casters which usually came in sets of three of differing heights were used for various condiments.
Thomas Bamford I was a specialist castermaker as was his master and his apprentice, Samuel Wood.
