Victorian antique silver gilt clan badge with STERRY crest.

Barkingside, Essex. Circa 1870-1890.

It was the done thing for a landed family of England to rent an estate for the season in Scotland, following Queen Victorias tradition of spending six to twelve weeks in the summer enjoying recreational pursuits including hunting, fishing and shooting.

These clan badges would have been worn by anyone with the family name and are now quite rare.

Part of the Sterry estate in Barkingside still exists under local authority ownership.

Motto: TRUE TO THE LAST

The crest is well recorded in Fairbairns Book of Crests and other reference books as two separate crests - one a sword bent at 45 degrees, the other a fir tree. These two versions are incorporated in the above crest.
